Maci Bookout's Toddler Biker Bentley?

Source: https://twitter.com/#!/MaciBookoutMTV
When I was pregnant with Phoenix, 16 And Pregnant (the precursor to Teen Mom) on MTV had just started to air. The character I loved the most was the lovely Maci Bookout. I'm not normally a fan of celebrities, but it is really cool to see somebody famous with a child the same age as yours going through all of the same things you are. All of the ups and downs of pregnancy and motherhood. She had her Bentley. I had my Phoenix.

Lately, I've been following her tweets to see what's going on in her & Bentley's life, and was shocked to find out that her 3-year-old son can already ride his bike without training wheels! I coudn't believe it! Phoenix doesn't even peddle his little Diego bike yet - preferring to just use his feet to scooch instead.

Is it just me, or does 3 seem to be way too young to ride a bike without training wheels? According to my big sis, I was 8 when I learned how to ride a bike without training wheels. So, either I'm a complete slacker, or Bentley is just one heck of an overachiever already. What do you think?

How old do you think the average kid lears how to ride a bike? Leave a comment letting me know. :)

Coloring Easter Eggs

This was the very first year we've colored Easter eggs since Phoenix was born. It was a lot of fun, and I'm VERY tempted to get a few more kits so we can do it throughout the year. It's a fun activity, and Phoenix LOVES to eat his pretty Easter eggs. :)

Yup, it's another SOOC Saturday, which means all of these beautiful photos are straight out of the camera and Photoshop-free. :)

What's your favorite Easter tradition? Leave a comment. :)

My Unconventional Approach To Discipline | Positive Discipline

When I was pregnant, I think everybody had the same idea about my ability to be a parent... that I would let my kids walk all over me & rule the house in a chaotic disaster usually seen on those nanny shows. Well, I'm proud to say that that this is certainly not the case... but it hasn't been an easy road.

Like a lot of parents, I feel like I've tried everything possible in terms of discipline. I'm ashamed to admit it, but for a long time, I felt in order to create discipline, I had to create a fear in my child... and I did. I yelled. I spanked. I gave time-outs. And, I hated every minute of it. I knew in my heart this wasn't the "right" thing for me to do. I was responsible for bringing up a young person into the world, and I wanted to raise a free-thinking, creative, compassionate individual - not the empty shell of where a curious child once lived.

This young child who has grown to trust me, who I've spent every minute of every day nursing, holding, loving unconditionally, and creating such a strong bond of love with... I was now supposed to... well... treat like crap.  I grudgingly attempted to turn off that kind mother in me, and tried to create this demanding, tough-love persona. It didn't work. Well, it worked in the fact that I was most certainly learning to be an a**. But, in terms of creating that well-behaved, obedient child, I failed horribly. I read numerous books about discipline, but nothing worked. I was lost, and I didn't know what else to do.

And, one day while watching an episode of Oprah's Lifeclass online, everything changed. The show was about how you become what you believed... and I had a huge breakthrough. My son was becoming what he believed he was. He was becoming what I told him he was... a bad, mean kid who couldn't behave, couldn't listen, etc. So, I changed how I started treating him.

Positive Affirmations
My first step in changing Phoenix's behavior was to change his self-image. I started doing positive affirmations with him in the car. On the way to the library, I would have him repeat after me things like:

I share all of the toys.
Sharing makes everybody happy!
I love sharing.
It's ok if somebody else plays with toys.
I love being nice to my friends.
The toys are for everybody!

We keep these very up-beat and fun. I always use an excitement in my voice, which Phoenix always mimics as well. It's an amazing exercise. And, I've found through trial and error that these positive affirmations play a huge role in Phoenix's behavior. I'll even do them at home. Whenever I feel he needs them, we do them. Best of all, he loves doing them too!

The other day, after we just finished a round of positive affirmations in the car, Phoenix said, "Thank you, mom."
"Thanks for what?" I asked him.
"Thanks for talking to me," he replied.
"You like doing those?" I asked him.
"Yup," he replied.

It's good to know that he loves doing these. The positive affirmations make him feel great about himself, and his behavior has improved tremendously as a result.

Talking & Understanding
Another trouble spot has always been leaving somewhere where he was having fun. I had been that mom who threw her toddler over her shoulder... screaming at the top of his lungs when we had to leave the library... but, not anymore. Now, when he tells me he doesn't want to leave, I calmly tell him that I  understand.

"I know you don't want to leave sweetie, but we need to go home so we can see Daddy and eat lunch," I say to him in a kind, loving voice. Then, I reassure him that we'll be able to go back another time. Then, I tell him to wave goodbye to _______, and say, "We'll see you later." I walk out, and he follows right behind me. It works like a charm.

Listening
Another change that I've made is simply that I have started listening to him. Instead of telling him to just be quiet and dismissing his feelings, I find out why he's upset, and walk him through what's going on. It works, and he likes being treated like a person with thoughts and feelings.

No Time-Outs
We've tried using time-outs quite regularly for a long time, but we rarely use them anymore. I think that when a child misbehaves, it's a sign that they need you more. They need you to be their parent - to listen to them - to talk them through things. They need you to help them deal with the complex emotions their feeling. They need love, not abandonment.

The Results
So far, I have been tremendously happy with the way this positive discipline has been working out for us. Most interestingly, I have really noticed Phoenix's compassion, thoughtfulness, and kindness really surface. Our house is peaceful. We speak kindly to each other. We're patient and understanding. Our family has found it's groove, and it's an amazing thing to be a part of.

Attachment Parenting
It recently came to my attention through a new book called Beyond the Sling: A Real-Life Guide to Raising Confident, Loving Children the Attachment Parenting Way by Mayim Bialik, PhD that a lot of the parenting I do is actually called "attachment parenting". It sounds needy, but is actually quite amazing, and feels right to me as mom. To learn more about positive discipline & attachment parenting, check out http://www.attachmentparenting.org

Before & After - Garnier's B.B. Cream

Do you ever see unbelievable before and afters photos for beauty products... and wonder how true they are to reality? Me too. That's why I was excited to give Garnier's new Miracle Skin Perfector B.B. Cream a try.  Short for Beauty Balm, this cream promises to renew radiance, brighten your complexion, even skin tone and blur imperfections, hydrate for  24 hours, and protect against UVA & UVB rays with SPF 15.

Below, I am sporting a completely bare faced on the left, and wearing Garnier's B.B. Cream on the right. This B.B. cream delivered on some promises a bit better than others. It hits a homerun in hydrating for 24 hours. This is definately a very light, but incredibly hydrting cream, and is the longest-lasting moisturizer I have ever used. I noticed a slight improvement in terms of renewing radiance and brightening my complexion. Improvements in evening skin tone and blurring imperfections were very slight. In fact, I still felt the need to wear foundation on top of this in order to look a bit more put together.

You can see the blotchiness has been removed from my nose - while still giving me the bare skin look.
My skin has an overall smoother & more airbrushed texture to it on the right.

I think this is a great moisturizing cream, that would be ideal for someone who prefers little to no foundation. For those who prefer medium to full coverage, this is an excellent base or primer that will leave your skin looking nice and dewy.

Check out garnierusa.com/bb to learn more and find helpful reviews.

DISCLOSURE: As a BzzAgent, I received a complimentary tube of Garnier's Miracle Skin Perfector B.B. Cream to facilitate this review. I was/am not expected to return this item or gift after my review period.

Ariana's First Taste Of Food

I'm so glad to still be nursing Ariana at 8 months old. There's nothing better than the feeling I get from providing my baby's nutrition from my body. But, there comes a time to experience eating solid food for the first time, and for us, that time has come!

She was all smiles as she feasted on sweet potatoes.

Oh, who am I kidding? She all smiles no matter what she's doing! :)

As she made her way through the tiny tub of food, I realized that this was less a lesson in learning to eat, and more a lesson in experiencing the messy fun that is food.

Oh, she loved that little spoon! Forget about trying to feed her with it. that spoon was hers!

Baby food - in all of its messy delight!

And... because it's good to keep it real... let's make this an official Straight Out of The Camera post too. ;)

0 Calorie Lemonade Recipe & Truvía® natural sweetener Product Review

I love lemonade, and since I started eating more whole foods, the powdered lemonade just wasn't cutting it anymore. So, what's a trying-to-eat-healthier girl to do? Well, I just made up my own recipe using... an actual lemon! It's delicious, and I hope you love it as much as I do!

PS - It's technically not zero calories, as a lemon actually contains a whopping 17 calories. (That's 1% of the calories you need in a day.) But, on the bright side, a lemon also contains 2 grams of fiber (6% DV), 1 gram of protien (1% DV), and 51% DV of vitiman C!

0 Calorie Lemonade Recipe
  1. Roll whole lemon on counter to break down the fibers in it to create more juice.
  2. Cut lemon in half & squeeze each half into a glass. (Use 1/2 the lemon, if you prefer a more subtle taste.)
  3. Fill glass with ice & water.
  4. Mix in a packet (or two) of Truvia.
  5. Stir & enjoy!

The Truvia gives the drink a great, fresh taste without the weird taste I get with aspartame sweeteners.

What's your favorite sweetener? Leave a comment. :)

DISCLOSURE
I received this product complimentary to test through Influenster’s VoxBox program.

My Happy List

When I first saw a "Happy List" over at More Than Words. I knew it was something I had to participate in. Something about reading a happy list just puts a big ole smile on my face! Right now, my life is in a really great place, and I have so much to by happy about. So... here's my first happy list. :)
  • I'm happy that I've started to work out on a somewhat regular basis. I'm doing 1.5 mile run/walks in the morning on some days & 30 minutes on the elliptical on others. It feels great just to have some "me"time and get moving!
  • I'm happy that Ken is n tae kwon do - it makes me happy to see him doing something he loves... plus it's given me a bit of motivation to get back into shape as well.
  • I'm happy that I have been able to experience one of the most beautiful Ohio winters ever.

It's Easy Being Green

I love that old episode of Sesame Street where Kermit sings about how it's not that easy being green. Little 5-year-old me just fell in love with Kermit after that song. *swoon* And, I know if I met Kermit today, we'd have quite a bit to talk about, because... 25 years later... it finally IS easy being green!

One of the easiest ways to be green is to simply change your cleaning products from toxix chemical-filled ones to pure & natural ones. I recently had the pleasure to try ecoSTORE USA's Dish Liquid & Laundry Liquid and have been very happy with the results.

The Dish Liquid has a nice, clean scent that does a great job of getting our dishes clean without the harsh chemicals. I also love that it's very reasonably priced - $3.80 for the 16 oz and $5.50 for the 32 oz. Oh, and who am I kidding... the bottle design is cute too!

The laundry liquid is great too. I love the fresh clean smell it gives my clothes without being overpowering. My son also has sensitive skin, so we've been washing his clothes in this, and his skin has really cleared up. The laundry soap is available for $4.50 for 16 oz and $6.65 for 32 oz.

I love that truly eco-friendly products are hitting the shelves of so many stores now. Recently, ecoSTORE USA has entrered in to the Walmart "GET ON THE SHELF" contest. Support ecoSTORE's mission to bring non-toxic, healthy products to the shelves of Walmart stores by voting for them daily at GetOnTheShelf.com. You can also vote by texting 5413 to 383838.  Voting ends April 3rd.

Attack Of The Phoenixasaurus

Playing dress-up and having imaginary friends have become hours of fun for Phoenix lately. From a bumble bee to a fireman to a pirate... he's dressed up as quite a bit lately. The latest addition to Phoenix's toddler costumes is this super-cute, soft-as-can-be raptor costume from Wholesale Halloween Costumes.

He started off as the most well-behaved dinosaur you've ever seen...

But was soon wreaking havoc all over his bedroom.

And... Mommy's leg was the next target for the wrath of the raptor!

Yup, there's nothing better than playing good old-fashioned dress-up!

He was workin' it - full on raptor mode!

And I was loving every minute of it too :)

Do your kids play dress-up? What is their favorite thing to dress up as? Leave a comment :)
